At Wain Homes, we’re passionate about supporting the communities in which we work and our team in the South West recently had the chance to make a difference in Okehampton, Devon.
As part of our Helping Hands initiative, which sees Wain Homes colleagues volunteering their time to help local good causes, a team from our South West regional headquarters in Exeter, donned their waders and wellies to assist with essential repair work along the River Taw.
Our team were supporting the Sticklepath and Okehampton Conservation Group, which helps improve the environment in and around Okehampton and the surrounding districts by identifying and developing conservation work required by the community.
On behalf of the Skaigh Wood Trust, we rolled up our sleeves to improve drainage and rebuild a pond wall to stop the path flooding and becoming impassable most of the year.
One of the biggest challenges was transporting equipment and materials using a pulley system to cross the river; quite an achievement.
Never a team to shirk hard work, our team helped fill and unload buckets of stone and material, convey them across the river, unload them into wheelbarrows and transport down the path to where we were rebuilding the pond wall and improving the drainage of the path.
Giving back to the Okehampton and Sticklepath community has extra resonance for our South West team as our former regional headquarters was based here for more than 20 years before our move to Exeter.
All in all, a rewarding day giving back to that community and helping to preserve this cherished walking route for local people to enjoy.
